History Of Veterans Day

According to the History of Veterans Day, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918, an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany came into the major effect. The Armistice Day was celebrated for the very first time on November 11th, 1919. In that same year, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be a solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the service of the country. Thereafter, in 1926, the US Congress declared the official end of World War I and recognized that the anniversary of armistice must be celebrated with prayers and thanksgiving. They also requested President about to issue a proclamation to display the flag of the USA on all government buildings and inviting the citizens to observe the day in schools, churches or any other places with appropriate ceremonies.

On May 13th, 1938 an act was approved which made November 11 in every year as a legal holiday, and termed as Armistice Day, that formally intended to honor veterans of World War I. After that, a few years World War II required the greatest mobilization of militants in the history of the USA and the American force who fought in Korea.

In the year 1954, the veterans’ service organization urged US Congress to change the word “Armistice” to “Veterans”. On June 1st, 1954 Congress approved these changes and since then November 11th become a special day to honor all veterans of America, where ever & whatever they had served for the nation.

The Uniforms Holiday Bill, in 1968 aimed to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of the October month. But the bill released effect in 1971. However, this made lots of confusion as several states disagreed with this decision and they continued to celebrate Veterans Day activities on November 11th. President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97(1975), which stated that Veterans Day would again be commemorated on November 11 from the year 1978 onwards and hence Veterans Day is still observed on November 11th.
